Developed a collection system for Hazardous waste in South Africa
This project was in collaboration with the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) in South Africa, Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) and Gästrike återvinnare.
The project developed a pilot project on how to collect household hazardous waste in Buffalo City in South Africa. It is based on the collection of hazardous waste from three different socio-demographical areas, an informal settlement, a middle-class area and a high-income area. This project received a lot of attention in South Africa as it was promoted by the President of the Republic of South Africa Mr Cyril Ramaphosa at another large environmental conference being held in South Africa. Gästrike återvinnare assisted with expert knowledge, practical knowledge and skills training.
Gästrike återvinnare was involved in the work of logistics, sorting of packaging waste and with Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality reviewed the structure of the solid waste work in the municipality.
Results
We developed a strategic model to collect hazardous waste safely and efficiently which could be rolled out throughout South Africa in the future.
The pilot project for collecting hazardous waste was successfull and we also developed a manual for hazardous waste that is used by the municipality and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) in South Africa. The idea is to roll-out this strategy in more municipalities.
